Lean Portfolio Mangement (LPM) 5.0

Lean Portfolio Management

In this 3 day course, you will gain the practical tools and techniques necessary to implement the Lean Portfolio Management functions of Strategy and Investment Funding, Agile Portfolio Operations, and Lean Governance.

You will have the opportunity to capture the current and the future state of the portfolio with the Portfolio Canvas tool and identify important business initiatives for achieving future success. You’ll be able to establish portfolio flow with the Portfolio Kanban and prioritize initiatives for maximum economic benefit. The course also provides insights on how to establish Value Streams, Lean Budget Guardrails and Lean portfolio performance measurements.

Lean portfolio management is founded on three principles.

  1.   Strategy and Investment Funding

Strategy and investment funding is built on the premise of allocating the right investments towards the most lucrative opportunities.

However, this goes beyond prioritizing and selecting the best investments. The portfolio must incorporate and understand its role in the broader enterprise strategy. As a collaborative effort, strategy and investment funding requires input from business owners, executives, technologists, stakeholders and enterprise architects.

The key responsibilities here include:

  • Connecting the portfolio to the enterprise strategy
  • Maintain the portfolio vision and roadmap
  • Draw lean budgets and guardrails
  • Establish portfolio flow

  1.   Agile Portfolio Operations

Agile portfolio operations deliver optimized performance through coordinating and supporting decentralized program execution.

This is achieved by helping an organization identify, prioritize and organize different products.

The primary responsibilities are:

  • Coordination of value streams
  • Supporting program execution
  • Fostering operational excellence

  1.   Lean Governance

Lean governance manages spending, audit and coordinating compliance, forecasts and budgeting, and portfolio performance measurement.

This requires the active engagement of the Agile Program Management Office/Lean-Agile Center of Excellence (CoE), business owners and enterprise architects.

The responsibilities include:

  • Dynamically forecasting and budgeting
  • Measuring portfolio performance
  • Coordinating continuous compliance
